6 Unusual Symptoms of Diabetes

Posted by Manoj Perumal on

When it comes to certain diseases, there are usually clear signs that indicate something is wrong before you go to the doctor. Other times, the signs may not be so clear or you may not be aware of them. Diabetes is one of those diseases. Some of its common symptoms include feeling tired, excessive thirst and hunger, urinating frequently, feeling numbness and tingling in hands or feet, and having dry skin. However, there are several other lesser-known symptoms of diabetes that you should also be aware of. Here are a few unusual symptoms of diabetes.

1. Fruity-Smelling Breath

If you or someone close to you have noticed that your breath has a fruity smell to it, that may mean you have Diabetic ketoacidosis. This condition occurs when your body is unable to use insulin for energy, which means that it has to break down fat cells in your body instead. When it breaks down those fat cells, acids known as ketones are created.

Having high levels of these ketones in your body is serious and requires hospital treatment. If you think you may have it, it’s important to get medical care right away.

2. Blurry Vision

When your glucose levels are too high, they can impact your vision. This is often because fluid is leaking into your eye. Due to irritation, your eye will swell, which affects your ability to see. Once your glucose levels get back into a normal range, the blurriness in your vision will go away. The American Diabetes Association recommends that people who have been diagnosed with diabetes receive regular check-ups for their eyes with their ophthalmologist.

3. Mood Swings

When your glucose levels are all over the place, it can also affect your mood. Blood sugar can impact how you feel and your mental health can really take a hit.

Here are some of the emotions you may feel when your blood sugar levels are low or high.

Low Blood Sugar:

  • Shaky
  • Confused
  • Nervous
  • Irritable
  • Tired

High Blood Sugar:

  • Angry
  • Sad
  • Foggy
  • Lethargic
  • Tense

These are just a few of the emotions you may feel when your glucose levels fluctuate. Keeping your sugar levels stable is important not just for your physical health, but also for your mental health. If you are experiencing these mood changes, ask your doctor if they can test for diabetes.

4. Dark Skin On Neck

This unusual symptom of type 2 diabetes is called acanthosis nigricans. Dark patches most commonly occur on the back of the neck, but they can also be found around your groin or armpits. On these dark spots, your skin texture may also feel different and velvety.

These dark spots develop as a result of insulin resistance. If you’re overweight, your body can develop this resistance. Your pancreas may be creating insulin, but your body struggles to use it. As a result, you have too much glucose in your system and develop these patches.

5. Slow-Healing Wounds

If you’ve cut yourself and notice that the wound isn’t healing as fast as it normally would, it’s possible you may have diabetes. This happens because diabetes can slow down your circulation system. This makes it harder for your body to send nutrients to the wound that allow it to heal. If your wounds aren’t healing at all, that’s an even more serious sign that you should be checked as soon as possible.

6. Sudden Weight Loss

Celebrating weight loss is great if that’s your goal—but sudden, unintentional weight loss can be very serious. Diabetes can cause sudden weight loss because of your body’s inability to break down sugar. Because it can’t use that energy, it burns both fat and muscle mass instead, which can bring down your weight significantly.
